Creating For The Biome has been a remarkable experience for us as the impetus arose out of a dramatic shift in our lives. We are not only the founders of For The Biome but the founders of New Chapter, the well-known herbal supplement business, purchased by Procter and Gamble in 2012. We parted ways with P&G in 2018 due to differences around direction. That parting was of course challenging as it meant we were no longer working with dozens of friends and colleagues in an organization we had birthed, grown, and nurtured for over thirty-five years. We were likewise leaving behind the stewardship of a mission and its formulary of products that were like dear ones to us.
Anyone who has suddenly left a long-held role knows how disorienting it can be, how overnight life takes on an altered reality vacant of purpose, direction, and a former sense of contribution and belonging. Values such as these had been central to how we defined the New Chapter culture and now we were faced with recreating ways to fill those needs for ourselves. We were both sixty-five years old, retirement age by most standards, but not by preference. Paul in particular thrives on an engaged work life, one in which he’s giving back in unique ways and can see the positive change he is making. An innate healer and passionate servant of the herbal kingdom, his formulations emerge not only through study, science, and research, but a practiced and time-tested intuition that unites him with the herbs themselves.
We entered the herbal field as a complement to our meditation practice and throughout the decades, meditation silently guided our business process and our drive toward raising consciousness in ourselves and the world. So too in our creation of For The Biome. Once again our home is molding itself into our workplace and once again we flow from outer work to inner work and back again. We share meditation with our employees and we depend on self-inquiry as our compass.
The word dharma in the eastern spiritual traditions points to an understanding that we are each here for a specific purpose and that the work of a life is to discover that purpose and give our whole selves to it, regardless of outcome. Dharma is service to life through the unique gift that flows from our unique life. We do it just because we do it, because that is what we were brought here to do to benefit the whole. It has been clear to Paul that creating healing herbal products is his dharma. In the forty years since he set out on that journey, he has positively affected hundreds of thousands of lives.
My dharma is to teach meditation, to expand my own spiritual understandings so they grow arms and benefit those I touch. In working with the inspired team we’ve created, my hope is to help build and guide a culture worthy of the name For The Biome, grounded in consciousness, kindness, and service.
At its genesis we conceived a high impact approach for our new enterprise. We knew that were we to start again, we would only want to do so if the larger purpose of the company was to give back. We ask you to give back with us and buy something extraordinary we’ve prepared as a gift for your skin and your health, your biome, knowing that with each purchase you are contributing to the reversal of climate change in our global biome, helping to give people homes to support our neighborhood Vermont biome, and supporting female empowerment around the world. We stand for our own healing, and yours, for transparency and truth, for resurrecting our broken planet, and for boldly speaking out for saner health care. We call this effort True Holism, an understanding that turning inward to heal in body, mind and spirit, will naturally lead to giving back towards healing the whole. And because we gave birth to New Chapter, to an entity dedicated from its start to paradigm-shifting formulations that change lives, we are poised to do that again. It is our dharma.
Our name is For The Biome. Born for the health of the microbiome and sensory nature of the skin. For the health of the biome of our company, our community, our earth, and with reverence to the spirit we all share.
We are here for your biome,
